Make a Difference

Why Serve as a Board Member for a Non-Profit Housing Organization in New Brunswick

Serving on the board of a non-profit housing organization in New Brunswick is an opportunity to make a real and lasting difference in your community. The New Brunswick Non-Profit Housing Association (NBNPHA) represents 170 non-profit and co-operative housing organizations that own and operate over 6,500 affordable housing units across the province. NBNPHA strengthens the non-profit housing sector province wide through advocacy, education, research, development support, and collaboration.

Board members provide essential leadership and oversight, helping guide strategic direction and ensure strong governance. Your involvement supports the long-term sustainability of housing organizations so they can continue to provide safe, affordable housing and respond effectively to the growing needs across New Brunswick.

There is an urgent need to recruit new board members throughout the province. About 1,000 long-serving volunteers have dedicated years of leadership and service and about 300 are now ready to retire. However, without new members stepping forward, they are unable to transition out of their roles. Succession planning has become a critical issue for many non-profit housing organizations.

There is an especially strong need to recruit skilled professionals who can contribute their expertise in areas such as finance, governance, law, property management, human resources, development, and community planning. Fresh perspectives and specialized knowledge are essential to strengthening organizational capacity and ensuring non-profit housing providers remain effective, compliant, and forward-looking.

Board service is also a valuable personal and professional experience. Members build leadership and governance skills, expand their networks, and work alongside dedicated individuals committed to community well-being. It is a chance to contribute your expertise while being part of a collective voice advocating for positive change in housing policy and development.

Affordable housing is the foundation of healthy, thriving communities. By stepping forward as a board member, you help ensure that non-profit housing organizations remain resilient, accountable, and ready to meet the challenges of today and tomorrow — while supporting a smooth transition to the next generation of community leaders.
